Self-adhesive vs glue-applied labels: which to choose?
It is one of the first decisions in any labelling project: self-adhesive or glue-applied? Both deliver excellent results, but they suit different packaging lines, materials and budgets. Here is a summary without the jargon.
What is a self-adhesive label
A self-adhesive label comes on a reel with adhesive across its entire surface and a liner (siliconised backing) that is removed on application. It is the most versatile and most widely used option today: it is applied quickly, cold, onto glass, plastic, metal or cardboard, and accepts practically any finish.
What is a glue-applied label
A glue-applied label carries no adhesive: it is printed on paper and the glue is applied in-line, at the moment the container is labelled. It is the classic finish for wineries and canneries, with a very "papery" feel and a competitive material cost per label on large runs.
Key differences
- Adhesive: the self-adhesive label already has it; the glue-applied label is glued on the customer's line.
- Packaging line: the self-adhesive label fits modern lines and varied formats; the glue-applied label needs a gluing machine.
- Material: the self-adhesive label accepts paper and film; the glue-applied label works on paper.
- Resistance: with self-adhesive we choose the adhesive for cold, moisture or the ice bucket; with glue-applied, the type of glue and paper is what counts.
- Cost: glue-applied can be cheaper per label at very high volumes; self-adhesive wins on flexibility and short runs.
How to choose
There is no better option in the abstract: it depends on your packaging line, the container, the conditions of use (fridge, moisture, outdoors) and the volume. If your line already applies self-adhesive labels or you need short runs and variable data, self-adhesive is usually the answer. If you come from a winery or cannery tradition with a gluing machine and large series, glue-applied remains a great choice.
