Sustainable label materials: FSC, recycled and compostable

May 2026 · BIOLID Industrias Gráficas

The label is a small part of the packaging, but it counts towards its footprint too. This is a quick guide to the most sustainable materials in use today and when each one makes sense.

FSC® paper

FSC®-certified paper comes from responsibly managed forests, with a traced chain of custody. It is the most widely used basis for a sustainable label and the one that best combines availability, price and finish. At BIOLID we work with FSC® Mix and FSC Recycled paper.

Recycled paper and substrates

Substrates with post-consumer recycled fibre reduce the use of virgin fibre. Their appearance tends to be somewhat warmer and more natural, highly valued in projects that want to communicate sustainability through touch as well.

Recyclable and compostable materials

Beyond the origin of the material, its end of life matters. There are recyclable films and substrates designed not to hinder the recycling of the packaging. Compostable or biodegradable materials are an emerging route, still with limitations of use: it is worth validating case by case whether they suit your product.

Wash-off adhesives and linerless

  • Wash-off adhesives: removable or water-soluble, they make it easier to separate the label from returnable packaging and improve its recycling.
  • Linerless: by eliminating the siliconised backing, there are more labels per roll and less waste.

How to choose

The most sustainable label is the one that does its job and is done right first time. Before choosing a material, it is worth looking at the packaging, its recycling stream and the conditions of use. We also print with self-consumed solar power and 100% renewable energy, so the production footprint comes down too.
